NATPE heads to Miami Beach in 2011

NATPE (National Association of Television Program Executives) is taking its 2011 television market next January to the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach. Over the years NATPE has evolved toward increasing involvement by Latin American television professionals. With the Latin American’s in mind, NATPE’s transition to Miami seems logical as many such potential participants have offices and homes in Miami which will save travel and lodging expenses. Recently the 1,500 room Fontainebleau Hotel underwent a reported $1 billion renovation.

NATPE: New media platforms bring big opportunities for filmmakers and television producers

As Bill Clinton’s campaign staff said in the ‘90s, “It's the economy, stupid”. The elephant in the room at this year’s NATPE (National Association of Television Program Executives) television market was the estimated 2,000 participants as compared to the 6,500 record in 2008. Needless to say the surviving distributors were selling to fewer rights buyers from around the world. That was the bad news.

The good news is...   READ MORE >>

Filmmaker Robin Peters at AFM

by Yayoi Lena Winfrey

Dreams are a way of life for filmmaker Robin Peters. The owner of Dreamscape Cinema knows how important it is to have a dream and the hard work it takes to make it come true. At the age of 12, Peters was just dreaming about becoming a filmmaker. But by the time he was 30, his dream came true when he made his first film. Peters has been making movies ever since. With six feature films in distribution, and many more in various stages of development and production, the busy filmmaker vows to never stop dreaming about making more films.

Filmmaker Bryan Hall’s take on AFM 2009

Here's my take on AFM this year. I went with a finished film in hand, Paper Boys, a hip, irreverent teenage boy's coming-of-age film with a serious main story and a series comic ensemble relief. Forty-five screeners were distributed about a month before the market and a little bit of validation of the film's merit from a few festivals and awards. Our film had no known actors and was for the most part, a drama, but could be marketed for its comic relief much like Fast Times at Ridgemont High or Dead Poets Society.

After the Market
2009 American Film Market

by Yayoi Lena Winfrey

Even as the American Film Market (AFM) celebrated its 30th anniversary, an economic pall seemed to spoil the party. In spite of 8,000 attendees from over 70 countries participating in the ten-day buying and selling frenzy, it appeared that festive excesses of the past were no more.

Filmmaker Chris Abell’s Talks About AFM 2009

by Chris Abell

In 2005 I attended the AFM as an attendee with no film, no finished script and quite frankly no idea what I was doing there. It seemed I had been hurled into a bizarre world of film I had not prepared for. Only upon my return to the 2009 AFM with a finished feature film did I truly understand the complexities of the business surrounding film and my role in it. I felt more like a business man than a film maker.

The American Film Market (AFM)
November 4-11 Santa Monica

by Yayoi Lena Winfrey

This November marks the 30th year for the American Film Market. That fact alone proves just how much it’s needed--even during these economically trying times and, perhaps, even more now because of it.

When I first moved to Santa Monica in 1996, I became intrigued by the banners dotting the city announcing that AFM was in town. Back then, the Market was held in February, and signs in retail outlets and restaurants that welcomed it back were omnipresent...
